![]() ![]() But I’ve never consciously thought, I can’t write about this or I can’t write about that. As I create the world that exists on the page, I get called in a particular direction. I don’t necessarily understand how that works I suppose the story grows out of the character. Sometimes, though, I don’t choose what happens in my stories. ![]() I’m always mindful of dealing with difficult issues in a sensitive way, but I also realize that they are part of every child’s life. People have feelings, fears, anxiety, all of those things. Though Billy Miller Makes a Wish is written for a young audience, you include a few events-such as the opening scene with the ambulance on Billy’s street-that could be somewhat frightening. I wanted to go back to his world, and, I have to say, it was very enjoyable. But I really couldn’t get Billy out of my head. That was taken away from me when I did this. I also love creating a character, their family, and deciding where they live. This surprised me, though, because part of the joy of writing a novel is getting to create a new world where I get to live for a while. It just felt easy and comfortable to slip back into that world. When I wrote the first Billy Miller book, my own kids were the ages of Billy and Sal, so there’s a lot in that book that is very familiar to me. What is it about Billy that appealed so much to you? ![]() ![]() In the author’s note of Billy Miller Makes a Wish, you say that Billy and his family stayed with you long after the first book, enough so that you did something you never thought you’d do, and wrote a second book. ![]()
